Volunteer Opportunities at EEHDA
The Heart of our Successful Community
In every thriving community, there exists a deep-seated belief that unity is our greatest strength. The unity of the East End was demonstrated during our work to help purchase the Rosenberg School property and it reflected what a community can achieve. For the EEHDA -an organization renowned for its dedication to community development, historical preservation, and education- is strong because of the dozens of East Enders who have given countless amounts of time over the years. Together, we have harnessed the power of volunteerism to shape our organization, foster social bonds, and continue its 50-year history. Over the years, our volunteers came together to purchase and maintain our cottage, Darragh Park and Alderdice Park, benefits we all enjoy. Please consider adding your name to the long list of current and former EEHDA volunteers.
Volunteerism at EEHDA
Volunteer opportunities at EEHDA are varied with something for everyone. They cater to a wide spectrum of interests, skill sets, and time commitments, ensuring that every member can find a role that aligns with their passion and availability. Where do your interests lie in our association?
Member of the Board
The EEHDA Board consists of 9 directors, 4 of whom are the officers and 1 who is the immediate past president. The Board meets at least twice a year, usually in January and August to plan for the upcoming months as well as at our monthly meetings between September and May. The 4 officers are the President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. The remaining 4 complete the Board and often chair committees.
Social Media
In today’s world, any business, nonprofit, or governmental entity must have some type of social media exposure. Currently, EEHDA maintains Facebook and Instagram accounts. Volunteers interested in managing these platforms would be responsible for keeping the community engaged through photos and updates about meetings, parties, and events. This person is also responsible for seeing that our website is current through our webmaster.
Party Chair and Helpers
The Party Chair oversees the planning of all gatherings sponsored by the association. A yearly budget is presented in January. Party themes vary—past events have included Mardi Gras, Cinco de Mayo, 4th of July, Kentucky Derby, and Thanksgiving as well as our First Responders thank-you gathering. The community also hosts occasional block parties and potluck gatherings. Party themes are determined each January for the upcoming year.
Fall Garden and Christmas Homes Tours
These two events are annual fundraisers for EEHDA, requiring many volunteers to ensure their success. A variety of short-term and longer-term roles are available to help these events run smoothly and profitably.
Membership Manager
The Membership Manager maintains current records of members and their contact information, using Excel. This position requires communicating with the Treasurer and managing the website’s payment application. Additional tasks include reminding members to pay yearly dues and responding promptly to email inquiries.
Facilities Manager
The Facilities Manager is responsible for the EEHDA Cottage and the two parks, Darragh and Alderdice. When repairs are needed, the manager works with the Board and contacts the appropriate handyman or specialist to oversee completion. Reports on repairs are given to the President, and invoices are submitted to the Treasurer for payment.
Program Coordinator
Each monthly meeting includes a community speaker to educate the EEHDA members on the speaker’s chosen focus. The Program Coordinator chooses the speakers with recommendations from members, runs it by the President for approval, and sets up any technology needed such as a computer and/or projector and screen. After the visit a thank you note is sent with appreciation for the talk.
Committees
Other opportunities are available through our various committees, including serving on Finance, Communications, Yard of the Month, and our monthly Newsletter.
